We arrived in Anchorage after a 4-ish hour drive from Trapper Creek for a four-day stay. We had enough days in this city to do some casual sightseeing around Anchorage, time for a send-off cookout, and then a great rail trip to Whittier.

Mark, Timber and I went to see the Ship Creek Salmon Viewing area – which was pretty dismal the day we went. I was expecting a creek full of active jumping salmon, but we saw very few.

We then went to Beluga Point along the Seward Highway. The tidal change here is the second most extreme (behind the Bay of Fundy) and the exposed soil between tides acts similar to quicksand and can be deadly.
After that, we sought out a dog-friendly brewery to quinch our thirst… While Midnight Sun Brewing Co.’s website said pups were welcome, we found out it is only during special outside events. So, on we went to Turn Again Brewing. They loved Timber and he was happy to pose for lots of photos!

Mark and I spend most mornings (5 or 6am until around noon) working, then we take the afternoons for sightseeing. One afternoon, we went downtown and did the total tourist thing of window shopping and hitting all the “trinklet” souvenir stores, as my dad calls them. Who knows, we may have picked up something for you!
Our time with three in our group came to end in this town. We reserved the pavilion in our temporary home at Golden Nugget RV Park and held a Farwell Fajita Fiesta! We had so much fun getting to know and tour with Steve, Phyllis, and Cindy. We are sure we’ll see them again at a future DRV rally or club tour!

Whittier
Our 13.5 hour outing to Whittier began with a scenic train ride on the Alaska Railroad, followed by a “glacier cruise” in Prince William Sound. Besides getting close enough to see a small section of the Beloit Glacier calving and hearing it popping and cracking as it splashed into Blackstone Bay, we had a Chugach Forest Ranger share incredible insights into many key glacier terms and explain the nuances of the more than seven glaciers we saw. Along the journey, we had great wildlife sightings, including Dall Sheep, sea otters, harbor seals, kittiwakes (birds much like sea gulls), Eagles; and on the way home at the end of long day, we spotted a pod of Beluga whales near Beluga point. We even had enough time between the train ride and boat cruise to walk the boardwalk of Whittier and take a few photos.
